1819 - The pirate stronghold at Ras al Khaimah (today a political territory of the United Arab Emirates) is destroyed by troops of the British and East India Company.

1941 - China makes the declaration of war against the three major Axis powers--Japan, Germany, and Italy--during World War II.

1961 - Tanganyika (Tanzania) becomes independent from Britain. The small northwest area ruled by Belgium will later become Burundi and Rwanda.

1992 - American marines land in Somalia to spearhead the international humanitarian/military operation to restore order in the conflict- and famine-ridden African nation.
