1916 - Sculptor, painter, and Filipino revolutionary Telesforo Sucgang dies; his famous works include the portrait of Spain's King Alfonso XIII and the execution of Jose Rizal.

755 - The An shi Rebellion during the Tang Dynasty is initiated by Gen. An Lushan; it will last for 7 years and supposedly take an estimated death toll of as high as 36 million.

1631 - Mt. Vesuvius in Pompeii, Italy erupts and unleashes seven lava flows that reach six kilometers unto the sea to form a big peninsula.

1990 - Haiti elects Jean-Bertrand Aristide as  president in its very first democratic electoral process.
