1899 - US Gen. Henry W. Lawton is killed in the Battle of San Mateo by Gen. Licerio I. Geronimo's forces during the Philippine-American War.

1271 - China's Yuan Dynasty officially commences as Mongolian conqueror Kublai Khan renames his empire "Yuan" in the bid to sinicize his image and win the hearts of the more numerous Chinese.

1972 - Idi Amin gives British workers in Uganda an ultimatum to either leave the country or accept the 40% pay reduction, in line with his nationalization policy.

1984 - Britain signs the Joint Sino-British Declaration returning Hong Kong to China.
