1991- The Philippines informs the United States that it has a year to complete withdrawal of forces from its military base facilities in the Southeast Asian country, following the RP Senate vote rejecting the renewal of the bases treaty.

1921 - Ireland, as the Irish Free State is declared independent, putting an end to a five-year struggle to be free from Britain.

1992 - Hindu militants numbering around 200,000 rip apart a Muslim mosque in Ayodha; at least 2,000 Muslims and Hindus will perish in the ensuing inter-communal violence.

1998 - Hugo Chavez Frias, left-wing leader of the Figh Republic Movement, is elected Venezuelan President.
