1941 - Filipino freedom-fighter Wenceslao Q. Vinzons leads his guerilla unit in his first big battle against the Japanese forces in Laniton during World War II.

1398 - Timur, 14th century conqueror of Western and Central Asia, subjugates the armies of Sultan Nasir-u Din Mehmud in Delhi.

1903 - The airplane built by the Wright brothers makes the world's first sustained flight near Kitty Hawk in North Carolina.

1996 - Six Red Cross aid workers are killed in Chechnya during the First Chechen War with Russia.
