1945 - KALIBAPI government is established in the Philippines under President Jose P. Laurel during the Japanese Occupation; the acronym stands for Kapisanan sa Paglilingkod sa Bagong Pilipinas.

1967 - The first successful heart transplant is performed in Cape Town, South Africa by Dr. Christiaan Barnar. 

1984 - Infamous Union Carbide gas leak leads to the death of more than 2,000 people and injury of over 200,000 others in India.



1992 - United Nations Security Council votes to send troops to famine-stricken Somalia.
