1941 - Japan bombs Pearl Harbor, setting off its invasion of the Philippines, then a colony of the United States. The bombing breaks American neutrality in World War II.

1912 - The bust of the beautiful ancient Egyptian Queen Nefertiti, (ca. 1350 B.C. of the 18th Dynasty), is discovered by German archeologist Ludwig Borchard.

1937 - Dutch Minister Romme forbids married women from working.

2001 - Taliban forces in Afghanistan flee from their last stronghold of Kandahar following weeks of bombardment by United States warplanes.
