1898 - The decree declaring December 30 as Jose Rizal Day appears in the Christmas Day issue of El Heraldo de la Revolucion, the official organ of the Philippine revolutionary government under Emilio Aguinaldo.

274 - A temple is dedicated to Sol Invictus by Roman Emperor Aurelian on this day believed to be the winter solstice and day of Sun's rebirth.

1758 - The first sighting of Halley's comet on its return, as earlier predicted by Edmund Halley, is made by Johann Georg Palitzsch, a Saxon (early German) farmer and amateur astronomer.

1914 - German trooops in the Ypres, Belgian region initiate informal Christmas truce during World War I by singing Christmas carols.
