1920 - Death of Bonifacio F. Arevalo, Filipino propagandist and artist during the Spanish period. Arevalo was treasurer of the reformist La Liga Filipina; he was also the gold medal winner for sculpture during the 1895 Exposicion Regional de Filipinas.

1642 - New Zealand is discovered by Abel Tasma, a Dutch explorer.

1958 - The search for a tiny, bushy-tailed monkey, lost in space after being fired off into a Jupiter missile's nose cone, is cancelled.

2003 - Saddam Hussein, Iraq's former strongman, is captured after nine months of hiding from the occupying United States forces.
