1965 - Tomas B. Mapua, renowned Filipino architect and founder of the Mapua Institute of Technology, dies. 

1603 - Emperor Mehmed III dies; he is notorious in Ottoman history for having ordered the murder of 19 of his brothers/half-brothers and over 20 of his sisters/half-sisters.

1972 - Fourteen survivors are found by the Chilean Air Force in the Andes ten weeks after their plane crashed.

2001 -Hamid Karzai is sworn is as Afghanistan President following the country's first popular elections.
